Overall the plan for public transportation in on the right track, with a couple of exceptions.

Specifically, there are gaps in terms of policy & planning for active transportation as a network and transportation access to the townships.

Buses to the Townships need to be a priority.
  • Public transportation, especially as the urban core develops, must be efficient, cost effective, reliable and be fully integrated with a simple and affordable fare structure.  It must extend out to the whole region, including the townships.
  • All efforts should be made to advocate to the provincial and federal governments to extend the two way all day GO from both Cambridge and Kitchener.

The LRT is the back-bone of the system.
  • The current plans for station area planning, express buses, rerouting buses to integrate with the LRT and general expansion to must be implemented as quickly as possible, and reviewed regularly to ensure that they are meeting ridership needs.
  • The LRT should be expanded to Cambridge as quickly as possible. This is an investment in our community and urban core development.  All voices about the route alternatives should be properly heard before a final decision is made.

Region Wide Active Transportation Network
  • The Region needs to adopt a region-wide trails plan to establish a true transportation network for active transportation. Connecting the existing trail segments must be prioritized and adopted by Council.  This will require working very closely with the local municipalities, and must include the adoption of a common wayfinding standard.  Active transportation provides accessible and affordable options, promotes health and reduces traffic congestion.
