Of course we should be talking about better ways to govern ourselves.
We should always be looking for opportunities to improve how we govern ourselves. The last time this was done was about 25 years ago, and many things have changed since then. Yes, any fundamental changes would require the Province’s approval, but that would be down the road, once we know what we want.
The first step would be to identify what is working and what is not, review alternative approaches for improvements and their pro’s and con’s, and then make a recommendation. The first two steps can be done without direct provincial involvement. Should recommendations arise that will require provincial involvement consultation would be key to the process.
We have value diversity and being innovative in our approach to problems. It would be my hope that this process would be a thoughtful and open public discussion about what the possibilities are, and that a ‘Made in Waterloo Region’ solution can be found.
